This 1917 guide told tourists, pleasure seekers, and medical patients about this early national park and city and how to use and enjoy both. It had been telling them that, in fact, since 1873, and was now in its 61st edition! Fees, services, and even the local climate were all explained as part of the amenities of "America's greatest health and pleasure resort". This booklet shows glimpses of buildings and scenes that are gone. It suggests social and recreational pursuits that were available then. The total picture reveals the grand and also the ordinary, a cross-section of the park and the city that grew together.

Here are three accounts of Brown's daring and patriotic (in his mind) but foolhardy attempt to rally the nation against slavery. Alexander R. Boteler was a West Virginia congressman who witnessed the fight. John E. P. Daingerfield was a prisoner who witnessed the fight at the engine house where the rebels holed up. F. B. Sanborn was a radical abolitionist. Sentenced to be hung for murder, treason, destruction of property, insurrection, and inciting slaves to rebel, Brown regretfully predicted that the only remaining solution to the problems of slavery in a "free society" was civil war. Foreword is by Neal F. Randell, National Park Service Park Interpreter at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.

SAINT LOUIS IN 1884: "The Future Great City of the World."

Early, the city was a supply depot on the west bank of the Mississippi River for emigrants heading across the plains. Our author was on the field directing the artillery for the U.S. and relates his experiences and those of other units during these 3 tragic days when the Southern Army of Confederates seemed within striking distance of Washington, D.C., the nation's capitol. A preface written by the National Park Service Research Historian opines that Hunt's story is "readable and informative, and may be the best introductory history of this great Civil War battle." The battle was great, too, in the sense of the wounded, missing, or dead during these 3 days, estimated at 51,000!
