 VISTABOOKS PUBLISHING: Southwest

ACROSS ARIZONA IN 1883--including glimpses of Yuma, Tombstone, Tucson.

Reprinted from Harper's Monthly, here is an eyewitness account--gathered via train, stage, horse, and on foot--of southern Arizona. The Indians are described, the wild element at Tombstone is reported, and the mission church of San Xavier del Bac is depicted. It was a time of cowboys, City Marshall Wyatt Earp and gambler "Doc" Holliday, and Apaches--the wild frontier days of Arizona long before it became a state.

Period engravings. 16 pages. ISBN-10: 0-89646-011-8. ISBN-13: 978-0-89646-011-9. Order #VIST0011 paper$3.95

THE GRAND CANYON OF THE COLORADO (Not yet printed)

"It seems a gigantic statement for even nature to make," our author said of Arizona's Grand Canyon. This is an unusual piece of writing for Muir, whose base is normally thought of as California's Sierra Nevada and Alaska. Yet he brings his descriptive skills to the southwest in this article and tells of the canyon rims and the vistas, the river contained within, the multiple rainstorms that can be in view at one time, winter weather, and of the animals. He also describes how visitors then traveled to the canyon (by train--available once again today) and stagecoach. Reprinted from 1902.

With engravings added from period sources. 32 pages. ISBN-10: 0-89646-075-4. ISBN-13: 978-0-89646-075-1. (Not yet printed.) Order #VIST0075 paper$4.95
