made observations on the geological origins of the landscapes he encountered,
and recounted his meetings with renowned mountain characters like John Muir and
Galen Clark. Unavailable since the mid-1970s, the work has been reprinted in its
original form with a new introduction by ranger/historian Dean Shenk. Appended
to the narrative is an appreciation of LeConte and a recollection of the 1870
